Learn How to Save Money and Water
Water conservation is not only good for the environment, but it’s also good for our wallets. A few simple adjustments to regular water usage habits could make a world of difference.
Did you know that a faucet with a slow leak at about one drip per second can waste more than eight gallons of water each day? That’s over 3000 gallons a year! What may seem harmless, can prove to be a costly problem that is also detrimental to Portland’s environment.
Okay, so preventing drips and knowing when it’s time for a new faucet or shower head will go a long way in water conservation tactics, but what else? In business for over a decade, 3 Mountains Home Services has compiled the following list of quick water conservation tips:
- Collect the water used for rinsing fruits and vegetables and reuse it for water houseplants. This is a great tip for DIYers who also want to be kind to the environment. Visit the farmer’s market and feel good about your water usage as the water flows right from your fruits and vegetables back to your house plants. Large mixing bowls and pitchers work great for capturing and pouring water.
- Keep a pitcher of water in the refrigerator instead of running the tap. Using a pitcher of water is a simple way to ensure that you and your family are getting and using every single drop of water from your faucet. This is far more efficient than accidentally losing excess water down the drain.
- Use the garbage disposal sparingly. Try composting vegetable waste instead of rinsing it down the drain. This is a terrific way to recycle while saving water by the gallons.
- Use the dishwasher! It may seem unlikely but washing dishes by hand several times a day can be more expensive than operating an energy-efficient dishwasher.
