Portland Plumber Tips: Advice on Home Improvements and Resale

Time to Start Thinking About Increasing Home Investment

Thinking about increasing your home investment?  Well, good—you, and everyone else!  But, don’t worry. We’re here to give you an edge with a few 3 Mountains Plumbing tips of the trade.

It is statistically proven that kitchen and bathroom home improvements typically increase home resale value, so it really is a good idea that you’re considering investing further in your home.  On the downside, the secret is out.  Most homeowners know what works for resale, so you don’t want to do a haphazard job of restoration only to have to compete with homes of similar value that went all out.

Two Rules to Follow

The professionals at 3 Mountains Plumbing have been restoring the kitchen and bathroom plumbing fixtures and systems in Portland-area homes for over a decade.

Before embarking on a major restoration job, we recommend two rules for our customers to consider following:

  1. Invest in your home. Make the most of it while you’re there.
  2. Avoid basic, last minute “tricks.”

Your Home, Your Comfort

We believe in making improvements to your home while you still live there and can enjoy them!  At the end of the day, you want your home to be as comfortable and luxurious as possible.  Of course we understand that most Portland homeowners must work to improve their homes within a strict monetary budget, but it is important to remember that home improvements typically translate to money earned in the long run.

Avoid Last Minute Updates

Remember this: there’s no such thing as a plumbing short cut.

We repeatedly see homeowners trying to make the least amount of improvements with the least amount of money, and at the last minute before resale.  In our experience we know that this haphazard approach is problematic.  First, you miss out on the opportunity to enjoy your own home improvements.  Second, and perhaps most importantly, rushed plumbing jobs are obvious—especially to home inspectors.

Ask a Portland Plumber: Do I Need a Shower Head Replacement?

Shower Head Replacement Test

A slow leaking faucet may not seem like a huge deal.  There are plenty of other potential plumbing catastrophes that Portland homeowners work to avoid, but even a slow leaking faucet could be detrimental to your water bill—not to mention bad for the environment.  So, as we begin to embark upon our spring cleaning, double-checking along the way for leaky faucets is probably a good idea.

Did You Know?

Did you know that a faucet that leaks at one drip per second can waste more than eight gallons of water a day?  That’s over 3,000 gallons per year!  Not only is this wasteful and harmful to the environment, but it’s also expensive.

3 Mountains Plumbing has always been committed to green initiatives in Portland and we do everything in our power to help promote environmentally sound plumbing practices.  We recommend water-saving shower heads as a fairly simple and inexpensive way our customers can begin to reduce their carbon footprint.

Why Spend Money on Water That’s Not Being Used?

Why spend money on water that’s not being used and why bother listening to a constant dripping sound when you can easily take matters into your own hands?  Of course, wasted water leads to further corrosion problems.

A Quick Shower Head Replacement Test

Here are some steps you can take to check if you should replace your shower head and save some cash:

What you need:

  • A bucket (ideally one marked in gallon increments),
  • A stopwatch or clock
  1. Place the bucket under your shower head.
  2. Turn the shower on to whatever pressure setting you normally use.
  3. Grab your stopwatch and time how many seconds it takes to reach the one-gallon mark.
  4. If the water takes fewer than 30 seconds to reach the one-gallon mark, a water-saving shower head would be beneficial.

Take control of your leaky shower head and don’t let your money slip down the drain!  Contact 3 Mountains Plumbing of Portland with additional shower head repair or replacement questions.
