Happy Thanksgiving from Our Portland Plumbers to You and Your Family!

This Thanksgiving we continue to be humbled and grateful to have been successfully working alongside Portland homeowners for the last 13 years.

We thank you for trusting us to care for your home’s plumbing systems.  We are also thankful for your loyalty and for your and kind customer reviews.  It has been our ongoing mission to bring Portland a delightful plumbing experience and we aim to continue doing so through this and every holiday season.

Do You Need a Portland Plumber on Thanksgiving?

If you need us, call us. We are on-call 24-hours a day/seven-days a week, and this includes Thanksgiving Day emergency service.

An abundance of house guests and a lot of cooking often lead to plumbing mishaps.  Here are a few common problems we run into on Thanksgiving:

  • Clogged Kitchen Sinks: Remember that household pipes will inevitably deteriorate over time.  Longevity is key, and it is important to take steps that will prolong the life of your home piping systems.  Clogs will happen if you are not careful, but whatever you do, do not use a liquid clog remover.  While this sometimes seems to alleviate the clog, it only moves it down while causing more damage to your pipes.  The clog will return unless cared for by a professional.
  • Failing Garbage Disposals: It is not uncommon for garbage disposals to falter when there are a lot of cooks in the kitchen.  First, check the reset switch underneath the disposal.  Otherwise, avoid putting stringy foods, dairy, oil, bones, or any foreign objects in your garbage disposal.
  • Clogged Toilets: Keep the lid down.  We know it sounds simple, but this prevents keys, cell phones, toys, and knick-knacks from clogging your toilet bowl!  Put nothing in your toilet but what instantaneously dissolves in water.

Our Portland Plumbers Are Standing By

Our expert journeymen technicians are ready to help if you need us.  We are fully stocked with higher horsepower garbage disposals, toilet bowl upgrades, and drain clog removal equipment.

This holiday, stay safe, enjoy your family and friends, and contact 3 Mountains Plumbing for tips on Thanksgiving plumbing emergencies.

Avoid Holiday Plumbing Emergencies Portland

Plumbing Upgrades Can Help Prevent Disasters

If there’s a plumbing emergency, we can help. Our fully-licensed journeymen plumbers are always on call–24-hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays, to help with whatever household plumbing task is needed.

Of course at 3 Mountains Plumbing our ideal goal is to get to know our customers before a plumbing emergency occurs.  We like our customers to know and feel comfortable with us first so that they are confident we can fix the problem in an event of an emergency.

The holidays are always a busy time for the plumbing industry. More household guests means more stress on plumbing systems.  We are here today to share with you some preventative measures and maintenance you can perform to ease and perhaps even prevent holiday plumbing woes.

1. Upgrade Your Garbage Disposal

A higher horsepower garbage disposal is the way to go.  Of course, even then, you have to be careful about what you put down your drain, but the higher the horsepower the less likely your garbage disposal is to fail and back up your kitchen sink.  3 Mountains Plumbing is fully stocked with a variety of garbage disposal options.

2. Know What NOT to Toss Into the Garbage Disposal

Be mindful of what you toss down the drain.  The worst culprits include:

  • stringy foods
  • dairy
  • grease

Also, be sure to dispose of waste gradually.  Do not shove everything down the drain and then turn on the disposal.  This may overwhelm the system causing a major back-up.

3. Install a New Toilet Bowl

We recommend 1.28 gallon toilet bowls made by Toto Ultra Max.  These highly efficient systems use less water to do more work.  They are better for the environment and save you money.  Installing a new toilet is one of the more affordable bathroom remodeling investments you can make for your home.

4. Install a Tankless Water Heater

Tankless water heaters are another terrific home investment.  These come in handy when hosting guests because they never run out of hot water.  No matter how many showers are consecutively taken, there will always be an endless stream of hot water for everyone.

Call Us Before Thanksgiving!

Be proactive!  Make sure your plumbing systems are well-maintained and in good shape before your guests arrive.  If not, know that we’re always here in case of an emergency.

Contact 3 Mountains Plumbing in Portland to help provide you with sensible plumbing upgrade and installation solutions.  Enjoy hosting your friends and family.  Leave the plumbing to us.

Garbage Disposal Maintenance Portland

The Rules of Thanksgiving Garbage Disposal Usage

It’s November already! This is the time of year we receive an increased number of emergency plumbing calls. Thanksgiving, as it should be, is a time when Portland homeowners host family and friends. It should not and certainly does not need to be a time to worry about home plumbing systems!

The reality is that an abundance of cooking, food, and waste tend to tax garbage disposals.  We are sure you’d much prefer to enjoy your families and dinner celebrations without worrying about a garbage disposal break down.  To help support that cause, here are some tips to avoid problems plus some 3 Mountains Plumbing upgrade solutions:

Do This

  • Use cold water when running the disposal.  Hot water melts fats that may clog or damage your pipes more quickly, while cold water tends to keep things moving.
  • Toss sliced up citrus down the drain.  Citrus helps reduce odors associated with garbage disposals.  Garbage disposal blades easily slice through fruit leaving behind a clean, fresh scent.
  • Get a higher horsepower garbage disposal.  More horsepower means more strength and less to worry about.  We are fully-stocked with a variety of home garbage disposal options.  Consider an upgrade before the holidays!

Do Not Do This

  • Do not shove everything but the kitchen sink down the kitchen sink.  Be reasonable.  We know it may be tempting to throw a whole turkey or corn husk down the drain, but realistically anything that large is going to strain and most likely break down the system.
  • Don’t stuff the disposal and start it.  Stuffing in piles of organic waste at once may overwhelm the disposal.  It’s much better to add smaller chunks than to try to dispose of everything all at once.
  • Avoid all of the following food items: bacon grease, oil, coffee grinds, bones, corn husks, and dairy products, and of course, non-food items.  Don’t spend more money on garbage disposal repairs and replacements.  Properly maintain the one you have, or consider an upgrade.

Portland Plumber: 3 Ways to Stay Affordably Warm This Winter

Get Your Furnace Tuned Up

Utility bills do not need to rise just because temperatures drop. There need not be an automatically inverse relationship here.  In Portland, the winters are damp, rainy, and cold, but there are affordable ways to manage this mild discomfort; tried and true methods to making your home a beacon of warmth and sustainability through the colder months.

1. Install a Tankless Water Heater

There are few things more enjoyable that a nice hot shower after a long cold day.  Tankless water heaters are a terrific investment because they conserve water and reduce monthly water bills while also providing an endless stream of hot water.  It doesn’t matter how many consecutive showers are taken.  Tankless water heaters never stop delivering hot water.

2. Update Your Garbage Disposal

Many people tend to eat more in the winter, and we say, go for it!  Just be sure not to dump all your leftovers down the drain.  First, try not to waste food, and second, if your disposal is slow or getting frequently clogged, consider upgrading to a higher horsepower system.  No one wants to worry about a busted garbage disposal while hosting family and friends around the holidays.

3. Get a Furnace Tune-Up

It’s always best to be proactive—especially when it comes to household maintenance and safety.  Make sure your furnace is up to par by hiring a professional to inspect filters and ensure there are no signs of carbon monoxide or gas leaks.

Don’t get caught in the cold.  Stay warm and let our professional team manage your household plumbing. While we’re always available to provide emergency plumbing service, we prefer, if possible, to have a chance to know you when the situation isn’t as dire.

Give us a call to learn more about how we can help provide affordable warmth and winterization solutions for you and your Portland home this season.

Portland Plumber: 3 Summer Tips

Avoid Plumbing Problems This Summer

Summer has officially arrived in Portland!

This time of year typically means gardening, barbecues, and more time spent outdoors.  You may even be looking forward to summer getaways or vacations away from home.

Serving the greater Portland area for over a decade, we see customers frequently running into the same summer plumbing problems.  We thought it would be helpful to compile a quick list of things homeowners can do to ensure that summer is enjoyed without time wasted on plumbing catastrophes.

1.     Don’t shove that corn husk down the drain!

We love summer barbeques and even encourage them, but please think carefully about clean up.  We know it can be tempting to throw everything down your sink’s garbage disposal, but the reality is that even sink disposals need some quality TLC.  Stringy foods along with fats and cooking oil can be detrimental to your pipes.  If you want a best-in-class, no nonsense garbage disposal replacement, we provide a 10-year warranty on our 1-horsepower unit.

 2.     Check your backflow prevention device.

If you suspect there is a problem with your backflow prevention device, we recommend contacting a professional right away.  Backflow devices work to keep your home’s water separate from city water and free of contaminates.  You and your family deserve fresh, clean drinking and sprinkler water.  Often, the valves controlling backflow devices rust and corrode over the winter, so it’s definitely worth checking that everything is in proper working order for the health and wellbeing of your home.  Tree root intrusion may also cause backflow prevention device destruction.  Our professionals can help eliminate this problem.

3.     Install a tankless water heater.

Going on vacation this summer?  If you already have a tankless water heater, consider getting it a quality maintenance check-up.  If you’re still working with a traditional water heater, think of all the energy wasted when you’re away.  Traditional water heaters generally hold anywhere from 40-80 gallons of water.  Traditional water heater systems heat water up to 120 degrees and then the water just sits in waiting until it is used.  Tankless water heaters, the far more environmentally sound option, work instantaneously.  They save you more money over the long-run and provide your desired temperature without delay.

Stay cool this summer, and let us take care of the plumbing.  Call 3 Mountains Plumbing today.

Portland Plumber: Three Garbage Disposal Tips

Watch What You Throw Down the Drain

Garbage disposal problems in Portland are quite common. With over a decade of experience serving the greater Portland area, we have seen our fair share of garbage disposal issues.  3 Mountains Plumbing, however, is happy to report that there is some good news.

First, Garbage disposal problems are easy to avoid if you know how to properly operate the disposals.  This means knowing what materials belong and do not belong in the garbage disposal.  Second, garbage disposals are somewhat easy to fix at home.  So, just because a garbage disposal is not operating correctly, doesn’t necessarily mean it needs to be replaced.  Either way, we can help, but for now, here are some tips to avoid garbage disposal problems in your Portland home:

  1. Use cold water when running your disposal. Hot water melts fats that may clog or damage your pipes.
  2. Don’t stuff your disposal full before starting the cycle.  It’s better to add small amounts of organic waste at a time so as not to overload the system.  Again, use cold water to rinse it through.
  3. Use Common Sense.  Don’t shove a whole turkey down there! (believe it not, this is cause for a lot of plumbing business on Thanksgiving).

We also suggest you avoid putting the following organic matter through your garbage disposal:

  • Coffee grinds
  • Bones
  • Corn husks
  • Non-food items
  • Bacon grease
  • Yogurt, milk, and cheese

Should you find that you need a garbage disposal replacement, 3 Mountains Plumbing is happy to inform you that we offer a warranty on all repairs and service.  We provide a three-year warranty on our ½-horsepower garbage disposal replacements, a seven-year warranty on our 3-quarter horsepower replacements, and a 10-year warranty on our 1-horsepower garbage disposal replacements.  This way you can feel safe and confident that you made the right decision and your garbage disposal is not something you’ll need to worry about fixing again and again.

Give 3 Mountains Plumbing a call today to find out more about how you should treat your garbage disposal.  Or, if you think you need a garbage disposal replacement, check with us for more information about our warranties and how we can help you and your Portland home.

Drain Cleaning in Portland

Signs You Need a Portland Plumbing Expert

Drain cleaning may seem like an easy fix to make to your Portland home, but cleaning a drain may lead to more serious piping problems, so beware. Drain clogs are inevitable.  They are caused by the natural buildup of organic waste including grease, soap, and other sediment.

Here are some signs that your drain needs to be cleaned:

  • Slower than normal water drainage
  • Significant back up of used water
  • It’s been a long time since the last drain cleaning

Should You Call a Drain Cleaner or Plumber?

Naturally, this blog will fall on the side of calling a plumber, but with good reason.  Portland plumbers are licensed journeymen who can anticipate possible problems related to drain cleaning.

Drain cleaners are not licensed to fix other issues with your home’s water system. This means drain cleaners can’t help if a pipe is damaged during the cleaning process. Hiring a drain cleaner only opens your home to a host of other plumbing issues that may very well result in calling a Portland plumber anyway.

What additional problems might arise?

Drain snakes may sometimes be effective, but oftentimes snakes only serve to move the sediment to a lower location in your home’s piping system.  This makes the problem worse, particularly if your home has PVC or galvanized pipe.  If the snake is ineffective, only a plumber can make a piping repair or replacement.

3 Mountains Plumbing has over a decade of experience serving the greater Portland area. They frequently help customers with both drain cleaning and piping replacements when necessary, so call us today!

Garbage Disposal Repair Portland

Portland Plumber: 4 Ways to Fix Your Garbage Disposal

It’s so easy to start shoving and pouring everything down your garbage disposal—that’s why it’s there, right?  Well, not exactly. We must learn to be nice to our garbage disposals!

Of course you don’t want to get a fork or other object caught up and mangled in there, but here’s a quick list of organic matter you may not have thought of that should steer clear of your kitchen sink drain:

  • Bacon Grease
  • Yogurt
  • Milk
  • Cheese

Not only will these products emit a nasty odor, but they can be very damaging to your sink’s piping.  Dairy products and greasy fats begin to coat your pipes, eventually building up a thick residue that may cause serious damage, particularly in older homes with galvanized drain lines.  The first sign of a problem is when the disposal grinder comes to a halt.  Usually, this can be fixed by simply hitting the reset button underneath the sink.  So, what can you do to help?

Here Are 4 Tips

  1. Avoid Putting Fat or Dairy Down the Drain
  2. Check the Reset Switch Under Your Sink
  3. Use Common Sense: Don’t Shove a Whole Turkey Down There
  4. Call 3 Mountains Plumbing for a New Garbage Disposal Installation (with a warranty)

A Garbage Disposal Warranty?

  • 1 Horsepower Garbage Disposal with a 10 year Warranty

Get the job done right and feel secure with a seven- or ten-year warranty from 3 Mountains Plumbing.
